DIY wood slat wall: build from scratch or use panels?

± 3 minutes

A DIY wood slat wall brings texture and a clear rhythm to an interior. You can fit individual slats or use ready-made panels. Both approaches can look good, but they involve different materials, preparation and finishing work. Decide which suits your room and the time you want to spend before buying timber or panels.

Table of contents

Building a slat wall from individual pieces

Individual slats give you control over the width, depth and spacing. They also require you to select consistent material, cut each piece, prepare the visible surfaces and keep the gaps even across the wall. Test the layout on paper and with a short sample section before committing to the complete feature.

A visible timber face and a veneered MDF slat are different materials. Compare their appearance, finishing needs and price on that basis. Include the backing, fixings, finishing materials and your time in the total, rather than comparing only the cost of loose slats with the cost of a finished panel.

    Using ready-made wood slat panels

Ready-made panels hold the slats in a repeated pattern, which reduces the amount of individual positioning. Adeqo acoustic panels use MDF slats with real wood veneer on the front and both sides, over a recycled PET felt backing. The standard format is 60 cm wide, with 260 and 300 cm lengths available.

You still need to plan cuts, sockets, the starting edge and the final join. Lay out the panels before fitting and compare the finish in the room. Matching end trims help finish an exposed edge where the backing would otherwise remain visible.

A decorative slat wall is not automatically acoustic treatment

Bare slats on a hard wall are not equivalent to a tested acoustic panel assembly. The backing, gaps between the slats and mounting construction all affect absorption. If reducing echo is part of the project, consider the complete construction and request the relevant test details.

Absorption addresses reflections inside the room. It does not replace sound insulation when the issue is noise passing through a wall from a neighbouring room.

Plan the details that make the wall look finished

    • Measure the height and width in several places and check the condition of the wall.
    • Choose the slat direction and draw the pattern around sockets, switches and skirting boards.
    • Allow for cuts and edge finishing when calculating material quantities.
    • Compare samples with flooring and furniture in daylight and evening lighting.
    • Choose fixings appropriate for the wall and the material being installed.

Heavy items such as televisions and shelves need attachment to suitable underlying structure. Decorative panels are not their structural support. Have electrical alterations handled by a qualified professional.

Choose the route that suits your project

Individual slats suit a custom pattern when you have the tools and time to prepare it. Ready-made panels simplify repeated spacing and combine the decorative surface with an acoustic backing. Neither route removes the need for careful preparation.
