Specifying acoustic wall panels: ratings, reports and installation

± 3 minutes

A useful acoustic panel specification identifies more than a colour and a single absorption number. It describes the product, installation and evidence required for the project. This helps the design team compare suppliers and prevents a component report being mistaken for proof of a complete assembly.

Table of contents

    Describe the supplied construction

Identify the slat core, surface finish, backing, dimensions and any accessory or edge component. Adeqo standard panels use veneered MDF slats with recycled PET felt; the fire-retardant range has a different MDF core. The veneer, adhesive and mounting must remain within the scope of any performance document relied on.

    Compare acoustic measures correctly

NRC is a numerical absorption measure under its relevant test framework. The weighted absorption coefficient αw and absorption classes use a different evaluation system. Neither is a sound-insulation rating or a prediction that a room becomes a stated percentage quieter. Request the full report and frequency information where these are needed, instead of converting one rating directly into another.

    Specify the tested mounting arrangement

Record the substrate, framework, air gap, additional absorbent material and fixing details relevant to the design. A framed and a direct installation are not interchangeable. Do not assume that any particular gap produces a claimed rating unless the report covers that construction. Coordinate the detail with services, edges and access requirements.

Distinguish component and assembly fire evidence

Reports for PET felt and FR-MDF separately establish only the stated component scope. They do not demonstrate the reaction-to-fire class of the complete veneered panel. Ask for a classification report identifying the actual product and field of application before specifying a complete-panel class. Fire resistance of a wall and reaction to fire of a finish are also different properties.

Define the documents and approval sequence

Request finish samples, product identification, relevant reports, installation instructions and maintenance guidance before approval. Where a sustainability scheme or local requirement applies, the project assessor should establish its evidence needs; the presence of a panel does not itself award credits. Keep substitutions subject to the same checks and retain the approved documents for handover.

    Frequently asked questions

Which NRC should be specified for a meeting room?

Have the acoustic designer define the required room performance and treatment. NRC is a product absorption measure, not the room’s reverberation target. Request the report for the intended mounting rather than assigning a universal minimum.

How can I check a fire report’s suitability for my project?

Compare the identified product, components, finish and field of application with the supplied assembly, mounting and substrate. Component reports do not demonstrate complete-panel classification. Ask the supplier and project designer to resolve any scope gap before approval.

How do NRC and αw differ in a specification?

They are absorption measures evaluated under different frameworks. Do not treat them as interchangeable or as sound-insulation ratings. Request the full relevant report and frequency information, and identify the measure required by the project.

How should an acoustic mounting frame be specified?

Describe the supporting construction, air gap, any additional absorber, fixings, substrate and edge details that match the approved tested arrangement. Coordinate stability, services and access rather than specifying only a gap dimension.

    Standards and report scope

For the absorption evaluation frameworks, consult ISO 11654 and ASTM C423. The applicable test report and installation details remain necessary when assessing a particular supplied product.
