Buying fire-retardant acoustic panels: a checklist

± 6 minutes

At a glance: Check classification scope, reports, installation details and finishing components before ordering fire-retardant acoustic panels for a business project.

Table of contents

    Define the project requirement first

A product described as fire-retardant is not automatically suitable for every commercial room or escape route. Have the responsible designer or fire specialist identify the required reaction-to-fire classification and any separate fire-resistance requirements. These depend on the building, use, location and applicable project rules.

Ask what the report actually covers

Check the named product and tested construction. Does the classification cover only the felt, separate components or the complete assembly? Standard Adeqo panels have B-s1,d0 felt. The fire-retardant range also has separately classified MDF. Component reports do not establish the classification of the complete veneered panel. Do not combine unrelated component reports and assume the assembled wall has the same classification.

Keep reaction to fire and fire resistance separate

B-s1,d0 is a reaction-to-fire classification under EN 13501-1. It is not a duration of fire resistance for a wall or door, and it does not mean non-combustible. Terminology such as fireproof, fire-resistant and B1 is often used loosely in product marketing. Request the actual standard and report to understand what is being claimed.

    Check the installation and accessories

Confirm that the substrate, fixing method, air gap, adhesive and edge details fit the documented application. Ask about suitable end trims for the fire-retardant range. If your project changes the tested build-up, have the change assessed instead of relying on the classification label alone.

    Request a complete quotation

Include finish, panel size, quantities, installation method, site address and delivery requirements. Ask for the classification report and acoustic test details alongside the quotation. Adeqo can help assemble the product information for your project file. Agree specifications and any custom-production lead time before ordering, so the material choice and project schedule stay aligned.

What fire classification applies to these panels?

In the standard range, B-s1,d0 applies to the felt backing, not the MDF slats or complete panel assembly. If your specification requires classification of the whole panel, ask Adeqo about the available evidence before specifying it. Component reports alone are insufficient.

What is the difference between reaction to fire and fire resistance?

Reaction-to-fire classification describes how a material or tested assembly contributes to fire. B-s1,d0 is a classification under EN 13501-1. Fire resistance concerns the performance of a building element over time; a B-s1,d0 panel label does not provide a wall or door with a fire-resistance duration.

Which fire classification does my project require?

The requirement depends on the building use, location and applicable project rules. Have your designer or fire specialist determine the required classification, especially for escape routes and public spaces. Adeqo can supply documentation for the selected product; a product label alone does not confirm compliance of the complete installation.

    Can I order custom-sized fire-retardant acoustic panels?

Custom dimensions may be possible by arrangement with your account manager. Confirm the product specification, classification scope and production lead time before ordering. Typical custom production takes 2–3 months.
